Dr Annie Gray delivered this lecture on 22 February 2017 as part of the Durham Castle Lecture series 2016/17.
Durham Durham Castle Lecture Series Durham University
I Enjoyed this. She was being honest about the life of queen victoria. Personally i'm tired of bio's about this odd looking queen. She was so on point when she said victoria was not a good looking woman #Truth :) This woman pulled back the Curtain on Victoria's life .... the reality not the glossed over bio's that we've seen. #WELLDONE!
Absolutely brilliant and entertaining! Thank you :)) Thoroughly descriptive on many levels. Very enjoyable.
So wish we had seen all the slides and the recipes though!
Great delivery!! And yes, t-rumpus is DISGUSTING!!!
She sounds like she had an obese, overbearing stepmother...
Who here has 13 children and sits down all day every day?
Why does this lecture rub everybody the wrong way? It was cheeky and full of depth.
I enjoyed this presentation! Dr Gray is a very good speaker and I don't understand the negative comments.
I really enjoyed this talk. This lady has a very lively approach to history and knows her subject extremely well. She akes no prisoners and believes in calling a spade a spade. Others may disagree but I LOVE THIS WOMAN.
A delightful lecture, with learning laced with laughs. One was reminded of a story about the wee young Princess Victoria drinking the doughty Duke of Wellington under the table.(These Hanoverian mares!)
this was wonderful. I just wish I could have seen the slide show!
Good grief. All the anger at the author! Queen Victoria was fat. The records show that the Queen overate. These are facts. It is endearing that along with her powerful, influential side there was also vanity, gluttony, passion, devotion, compassion. What an amazing woman!
Excellent. Informative, funny, & the author has an encyclopedic knowledge of subject. Thank you.
Stopped watching and thumbed it down when I realized that we're not privy to the photos being shown to the audience.
It isn't unheard of that someone in depression following the loss of her husband, of course, in mourning, would find comfort in food. Hence the term "comfort eating." Sarcasm really puts me off too-- And another thing, the Queen's metabolism could have changed after having kids--mine did. I blow up if I look at a full plate of food. I have to have mostly protein shakes with salads. And what's with the attitude----did Victoria shoot her dog or something?? This video gave me a headache. Finally, I never did see those pictures she was alluding to.
Excellent lecture. Fascinating.
This was a great lecture.
GREAT LECTURE Thank you Dr. Gray A captivating style of lecturing. Enjoy your dry humor. Too bad can't see the slides😔
She speaks wet like she likes food too. The slide thing is probably a copyright infringement. It happens a lot with lectures because the researcher doesn't own them.
interesting... but would be way better if we could see the slides Dr. Gray is referring to.
A superbly portrayed insight into Victoria.. very amusing and enlightening....If I had any criticism it was we couldn't see the pictures she was talking about....Excellent and Thankyou......Please do a similar video on Henry VIII, That I'm sure would also be excellent.
brilliant. So much mis-informationtion put right. I wish you had been introduced as Doctor by the presenter.
People seem to be very angry about this presentation. I enjoyed it, Trump joke and all! I just wish that we could’ve seen the slides.
If I had that much wealth and power I might eat a lot too. Queen Victoria’s life always feels cold and stressful to me. Looking at her through her food is interesting though.
I think Victoria would have put this lady firmly in her place, probably with a one-liner.
Germans are greedy didn't you know.
So annoying that you can't see the pictures she's showing
Too bad the shot wasn't wide enough to show the pictures she was describing. I found her quite funny, and her lecture entertaining.
I think dr. Gray did a wonderful job! I loved listening to it and would have very much liked to see the pictures.
Who was the camera person.? There was a slide show with her talk. I would like to have seen what she was talking about.
I listened to a good portion of this lecture. I know nothing of the subject, nor do I pretend to have any intellectual leanings or experience of such lectures per se. What struck me most before I stopped listening was that I felt in my own heart, hurting, anger, and grief. I believe that is what Dr. Gray is speaking from ... and for myself, I found that it polluted much of what she was speaking about. But I tried instead of reacting to her from my own bruised ego, to have compassion for myself, and so for her own past and those who've suffered the injustices of which she speaks. There is such suffering in this life.
What is the point of this? Royalty are still human and not perfect. I find this very distasteful.
It's too bad that she is so biting in her delivery and harsh in her sarcasm, and I am offended by her comments about Pres. Trump.
What a horrid presentation. I'm viewing to "hear" what you say not to "see" your delivery.
Gerry Garcia they probably set up a cam and just left it. Too bad.
I'd rather listen to Brits who like Trump. Stuart Varney, for one. Victoria was a woman of her times.
You should show the photos instead just this woman talking
Brilliant delivery. Excellent lecturer.
Why does she hate Queen Victoria?
Looking at the acerbic beginning, then reading some comments, i will abandon my efforts to rise above this bitter, angry woman, to complete what should have been an enjoyable subject. The book will be no better, so glad of the warning.
After an hour+ of viciously fat shaming Victoria, she shamed the fat shamers of Victoria and said she should have been able to ear what she wanted???
Really enjoyed this lecture but spoilt somewhat by her constant feminist remarks.
I wish they had shown the paintings and photographs to which the speaker was referring.
Would have been nice to have seen the illustrations/ photos instead of an uninterrupted diet of the presenter.
Did she really have to bring Donald Trump into a lecture on Victoria? Not all in her 'audience' find her remarks amusing or appropriate. Give the lecture and leave the disparaging remarks about the leader of the most powerful country in the world at home, where you can gossip about it over tea. I am not amused.
Since you brought it up (". . . the leader of the most powerful country"), you show a great sense of the ridiculous. The only thing for which Trump leads is the record for claiming bankruptcies for which the US citizens ultimately pick up the bill. Your ignorance is just sad.
A Green The most powerful country in the world? Trump and the Republican Party have made America the laughing stock of the world. Global leadership, innovation and respect is now more in the hands of European leaders.
A Green, Right. Trump is an ass. I thought it was appropriate, actually. The reference to Trump. The lady may have stagefright. But you know I find diet just very interesting.
It would have been instructive to see the pictures that Dr. Gray so clearly is using to illustrate her history. She does a wonderful job of explaining her subject but the monotonous training of the camera on her face does not add to the experience.
The lecture was good but much ruined by the cameraperson choosing not to show the pictures to which she often refers.
Disappointing not to see the photos in Dr. Gray's Powerpoint.
Victoria - the Black Blob!
I really wish we could have seen the pictures that went with the lecture.
very interesting. thank you
QUEEN VICTORIA THE GREATEST QUEEN OF ENGLAND - If Dr. Annie Gray spoke out against the Queen when she was living, she would be cast into one of the dungeons facing trial. STRIKE at one Royal Monarch and you strike at all the Monarchs which endangers the future of the Monarchy. RESPECT IS IN ORDER. Disgusting bit of 30 seconds of fame ... SHAME!!
STRIKE at someone when they can no longer defend themselves or their actions. The TRUTH is Queen Victoria allowed herself to be in a state of mourning long after her beloved Prince Albert expired. Her love was so great she drowned her sorrows in the comforts of food. Queen Victoria is and will always be one of the greatest Queens who ever lived. When you can speak out against the Monarchy how long do you think the Monarchy will survive? All books which are negative in nature should be banned from public reading. SHAME !!!
what a shame we don't see the video slides.
interesting subject but it would have been much better if we could see what she was referring to.
Dr Gray, Is entertaining but I would have liked to see the photography she was obviously looking at.
Dr.Annie refers to pictures at her right, but we are not shown them. It would be complete, as a video, if we were shown what the speaker is referring to. Very dissapointing to be so left out. Victoria would not approve such an oversight.
Would've liked to see the pictures that the speaker was showing.
It would have been nice to see all the photos that were discussed.
She was a Fake Queen, a German Usurper of the English Crown. I find it wonderfully amusing that she was a disgusting Fat Pig, and most likely had a stench about her that was quite foul.
she seems to have been a proper Georgian with her food! (the exception to the rule seems to have been George III. he didn't like the tendency to plumpness which he inherited so tried to be careful with a great deal of exercise and a restricted diet. he tried to pass this example onto his children in their early life and failed spectacularly.)
A pity that we can’t see the slides.
Very enjoyable lecture. Pity we did not see the slides.
What a wonderful speaker !! Kept me interested and wish it didn't end.
Love the dialogue, super interesting. Just wondering why we weren't being shown those slides which are being alluded to and are being illustrated ? Dayum shame ..
I would like to view this film spliced with the photos she is showing in her lecture. Otherwise, quite interesting.
and the Irish famine north east northwest empire history and stil here victoirios yesterday not today
White funeral? After decades of wearing frumpy black dresses she said that "black was depressing?". Such a strange woman having grown up in an unusual manner, with stacks of unearned cash at her disposal.
MarshalPoole and also because it was expensive, as I mentioned, though less expensive by the time she died than when she got married because of the development of chemical detergents and also because white clothes were cheaper because of the advent of cotton and muslins. But she probably didn't really know how much clothes cost.
MarshalPoole she was in mourning since Albert died but many traditional funerals are still white to represent purity. She was the person who popularised white wedding dresses to donate expense and status because most people before then bought a new dress for their wedding but couldn't afford not to wear it again and white was very difficult and costly to launder. She most likely wanted a white funeral because she thought of it as her second wedding because after she died she would rejoin Albert in heaven.
Wonderful presentation. I am fascinated by her eating (gobbling) habits. Did she ever work for the country? She writes letters, plays with her children, & argues/adores Albert. Thank God for her Prime Ministers.
I wish I could see the slides...
Sausages and chestnuts.. 👍👍🍴🔪
Even in a talk about Victoria you managed to insert your negative views about Trump. Such a liberal thing to do. Stick to your own national figures. You lost credibility and I do not care to listen to the rest of your opinion.
Miss Ellie ,
Gerda Silvius ii
Great story.....referencing pictures continually, but alas, I was t privy to see any
So, no one thought to pan the camera to the illustrations??
Spoiled for me by unnecessarily lengthy introduction, telling us little about Victoria, and straying into remarks about current day political figures which were calculated to put off those of us who are grateful for Donald Trump's presidency. The speaker doesn't like him - that's her right. But her view of him has no place in a lecture billing Queen Victoria as "A Greedy Queen".
Really? She'ss giving a lecture talking about photo after photo and the camera can't just pan over quickly or the computer can't just insert the photo so we know what she's referring to?
Why aren't you showing the pictures behind the speaker??? Come on.
It would be awesome if we could see the pictures she's referring to.
Dr. Grey is an excellent story teller, I just wish we could have seen the pictures she was showing the audience. Could have used a split screen?
The derisive delivery is a bit off-putting.
I thoroughly enjoyed this lecture. This information covered was fascinating to me. However, I was quite annoyed that the You-Tube audience was not shown the slides Dr. Gray was presenting. It would have greatly enriched the experience.
Wonderful presentation by Dr. Gray. She brings life to Queen Victoria in a way that we can relate to. Thank you very much for sharing.
Sarah Anderson there is no way to “relate” to queen Victoria. She lived in a different time. What we think as normal does not apply
The rudeness of this woman at the beginning of the lecture turned me off so I turned her off! Can’t believe we are body shamming a woman who has been dead for over a hundred years.....calling Victoria a black blob in her later years and not that attractive in her younger years.....you know when you point finger at people there are 3 fingers pointed back at you Dr Gray
Epiphany Coleman Hi she said this is what the people called her.
Wish she would get to the subject. About to give up on this
Too bad the photos from the lecture aren't linked.
They have matching hair styles.
Fascinating but disappointed the video didn't show the slides that the room is seeing.
Would have been better if we could see the slides too. Bit boring just looking at the speaker :(
I love that show!!
Too bad we are unable to view the images she displayed throughout her lecture.
I loved this! I wish I could have seen the side show!
disappointing, the slides are not shown
Annie keeps looking at pictures on the wall, but never shows us, How boring.
It would be helpful to see the illustrations the speaker is using.
It would have been nice to see the slides she was showing.
Good, however, too bad one can‘t see the images the speaker refers to.
I would have loved to see the pictures she was referring too
interesting but i would have loved seeing the slides
