I see a lot of comments from people here who don't seem to understand the analysis was about making the car more efficiently. Simplifying processes to reduce the amount of labor needed for assembly. As said in the video, the car is not as efficient to build as a comparable car. It's a great car, that has room for improvement. A more efficient assembly process could not only increase profits but reduce the price of the car.

I would be interested to know if the fewer body panels that they suggest require more complex stamping equipment. Tesla may be using more (but smaller) stamping presses for their vehicle design because they know that stamped steel will become obsolete once fleet buyers are dominant and those buyers will demand composite bodies to save fuel. When your car has a lifecycle of 200k mile over 15 years it doesn't pay to spend an extra 5k on the body, but if that same vehicle is used in a self driving vehicle fleet and has a 10 year 2.5 million mile life, an extra reduction of 20-30% in fuel costs (at .11 a mile) makes financial sense (a 20% fuel savings would save 55k in fuel costs).

As an engineering student that also has some manufacturing experience, a lot of engineers dont know how to make their designs “user friendly”. Youll see things like engineers using screws that virtually no one uses or designs that are way too complex. I still think that Tesla’s are real piece of innovation because of just purely their battery.

This really come across as very biased, that engineer did not explain a single thing, all he did was give opinions without any form of validation. Engineers who say something is not right and then offer no explanation as to why it is not right are rather crappy engineers, of course I would not be surprised if he did but the editors cut it because he may have said something they did not like that made Tesla look good... i think they did a good job of the teardown, and although it can be criticised in production engineering terms, going by the general and conventional standards of the auto industry, it ends up being a backhanded compliment. In a nutshell, here's what makes the Tesla: it is built to the standard required by the fact an EV will typically have a life span of twice that of an ICE vehicle - gasoline or diesel. What kills cars, is 90% engine and transmission failures, at an age where the car is no longer economic to repair. Electric vehicles as pioneered by Tesla, have only a simple reduction gear as their transmission. The motor has one moving part - the rotor in the middle. Internal combustion engines have maybe 200 moving parts. The transmission has maybe three gearwheels plus a differential, so that's less than 10 moving parts I think all-in. My standard ford-style or Borg-warner/GM/other transmission on my 5-pot diesel Volvo has umpteen clutches and gears and two big impellers...I am guessing about 100 moving parts plus complex electronics and software so it is not simple. It is time to accept, that maybe a car like this, is more like a home, than a conventional car. Indeed, with software upgrades it can become more efficient with age. Battery advances too. An ICE auto is fundamentally locked into its era of technology. Predict the end for them - 5 years? Could it be as much as ten years? The EV has no end point. The conventional auto-builders are building to a design standard now obsolete, for cars with a ten-year lifespan only. This car, might well continue until metal fatigue sets in - hence the body build is so high on quality and low on production engineering 'efficiency'. You can spend 40k easily on a VW or Audi new - compare it with what you buy into with a EV such as Tesla, or many others. They have to be stronger to carry the battery tray underneath the cabin, it all fits. The critique is correct, within the confines of present old-automaker 'norms'. There is a new normal however, and Tesla have blueprinted it for all to follow - exactly as Elon Musk wanted. There are few losers with the new way of doing things - even the admission it takes more employees is actually an argument for this new way of going about manufacturing surely?

Me personally i like tesla and i was thinking about buying one, but the problem is that they start to break down at 120,000+ miles and they dont have 3rd party repair shops to deal with issues that the car has meaning you have go go straight up to the dealer and pay a shit ton of money to repair the car, tesla says that they make good efficient cats but they are not reliable, dont get me wrong what they are doing is great but they need to find a way to fix this problem and provide 3rd party repair shops to help customers fix there problems with the car instead of just paying a shit ton of money to repair one little button.

Perhaps a bigger problem will be VW selling a vehicle comparable to the Model 3 for $23,000 (max price), at a loss, due to government mandates. Perhaps VW can eat the loss, but Tesla might not be able to lower the Model 3 price (target: $35,000) to a ballpark of $25,000 and survive very long. The last thing Elon Musk needs to do is halt production to wait on adding the next "latest and greatest". I know of no TESLA ow ner who is satisfied with their TESLA. They LOVE their TESLAS. The fact that TESLA partnered with Panasonic on battery design, shows how smart they are. Panasonic makes some of the best consumer batteries i.e.: ENLOOP I kick myself for not buying TESLA stock when it dropped 15% before its latest jump. Neodydium magnets are common in lower high end stereo speakers.

Until I figured out he's pronouncing it wrong, it's spelled Halbach, the "ch" is not pronounced as a "k" but is a guttural sound, like the "ch" in chromosome. Halbach arrays are not exactly new, first dicovered in 1973, rediscovered in 1980s and used in particle accelerators, refrigerator magnets, Maglev trains and.. Tesla is the most innovative car company. When Tesla started every other car manufacturer didn't bother with the massive production of electric cars. Now nearly every car manufacturer is interested. Of course Tesla doesn't have the experience of BMW in massive car production. Tesla cars aren't affordable cars and I doubt that will ever be. Certainly not cars for everyone.
